Jordan wins Lytham Trophy by nine

England’s Matthew Jordan left the field trailing in his wake as he swept to a nine-shot win in the Lytham Trophy at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Jordan, a Walker Cup player, was eight under par for the 72-hole tournament, returning scores of 67 69 70 66. His rivals were in touch after three rounds, just a couple of shots behind, but Jordan started his final round with a birdie and then there was no holding him.

“This is a great win to get under my belt,” said the 22-year-old, whose father, Andy, acted as his caddie, just as he had done during his victory at last year’s St Andrews Links Trophy.

“I played the course well all week. I didn’t really do much wrong. I think I only found one fairway bunker. I kind of had a second shot to every green which is what you have to do round here.

“There’s a lot of trouble out there and it’s pretty easy to find if you’re not careful.

“I’ve now got a stretch of five or six events now so let’s hope I can maintain this sort of form for them,” he added.

Jordan, from Royal Liverpool, Cheshire, is the third Englishman in a row to win the prized Sputnik trophy, following Jack Singh Brar last year and Alfie Plant in 2016 – both of whom were also members of the 2017 Walker Cup team and are now professional tour players.

The runner-up at Lytham was the in-form Mitch Waites of Filton, Gloucestershire, who won the Hampshire Salver earlier this season.

Former boy international Tom Plumb (Sherborne, Dorset), took fifth place while Todd Clements (Braintree, Essex) was sixth, a shot behind. Clements, the English amateur champion recently won the individual title at the European Nations Cup.

Jake Bolton (Ogbourne Downs, Wiltshire), Spanish amateur champion Billy McKenzie (Rowlands Castle, Hampshire) and Ben Hutchinson (Howley Hall, Yorkshire) were in a group sharing ninth place.
