Sophie’s terrific play forces a play-off

Curtis Cup player Sophie Lamb forced a play-off with a terrific final round of four-under in the Welsh women’s open, but was pipped on the first extra hole.

Lamb was two adrift of Scotland’s Hannah McCook with a round to play but caught her with a 69, as both players finished on seven-under at Aberdovey.

But the title went to the Scottish player who got up and down for victory on the first play-off hole. Afterwards Lamb, 20, paid tribute on Twitter to the ‘awesome’ play of her opponent and commented ruefully: “What a disappointing finish…but that is golf.”

Lamb teamed up with Lily May Humphreys (Stoke by Nayland) and Georia Price (Bude & North Cornwall) to win the Nations Cup on eight-under par. The team tied with Scotland but won on countback thanks to their better final day scores.

Overal, Engand players were on impressive form. Humphreys  - anther Curtis Cup player - shot three-under in the last round to share third place with Thalia Kirby of the England Golf girls’ squad. Kirby (Stoke Park) was two-under for the final round, finishing the 54-hole tournament on one-under par.
