Oh brother! Lancashire team trebles up

The Lancashire boys’ team played happy families in their final U18 match of the season - with three brothers in the side.

The Holland brothers are all members at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club with eldest James, 18, who has a handicap of 0.3, making his final junior appearance in the match against the Lancashire girls’ team.

He was joined in the line-up by George, 15, who plays off -0.3, and Charles, who is 13 and is already down to 4.6.

The match marked the first occasion the three brothers had played for Lancashire at the same time. James and George have been a regular fixture in the U18 Boys’ ranks this season, but Charles made his Lancashire debut in the mixed age contest against Yorkshire at Burnley, when he won his singles match.

What's more, there are more Holland brothers waiting in the wings, with Harry 10, and seven-year-old Jude, having also taken up the sport.

Lancashire Boys’ Chairman Neil Dalton said: “It was great to see three brothers so proudly representing the county together – something nobody could remember having happened before. They are a lovely family – the lads are all very grounded and very hard-working.”

He added: “The U18 boys’ season has seen some excellent performances and there are some exciting young players coming through the ranks thanks to the hard work going on at clubs across the county, with the support of the Lancashire Union.”

While the appearance of the three brothers had county officials searching the record books to see if it had ever happened before, it was the Lancashire girls’ team who had the last laugh with an 8½-3½ victory over the tight and testing Formby Ladies’ course.
