Burghill Valley team win Junior Champion Club title

A trio of teenagers from Herefordshire won England’s Junior Champion Club tournament today by the tiny margin of one point.

Huw Layton, 14, and 17-year-old team-mates, Conor McNeil and Cam Probert, claimed the title for Burghill Valley Golf Club.

They scored 148 points with their best two scores counting in each of two rounds on the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa and all three contributed to the total. The runners-up were Addington Palace, Surrey, on 147 points, while Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, and Kettering, Northamptonshire tied third on 143 points.

“It’s great, fantastic,” summed up McNeil. “It’s my last year as a junior so it’s extra special.”

He provided the score which took the team over the winning line, with his second round of 43 points. He plays off 10 handicap and was three-over gross with a flurry of birdies on the back nine.

The team were lying third after the first day when Layton and McNeil both scored 36 points and Probert had 37. Their plan for today’s second round was simple: to aim to play to their handicaps and to finish in the top three. They exceeded their expectations when Probert added his 32 to McNeil’s 43.

“It’s been enjoyable,” said Layton, a nine-handicapper who, like the other two, was playing in his first national final. Probert, who plays off three, added: “This gives us a big confidence boost.”

The final was played as part of England Golf Week which is a five-day celebration of handicap golf.
