Italy’s Emilie claims England U13 crown

Emilie Paltrinieri - Girls' U13 Champion 2014

Italy’s Emilie Paltrinieri beat par today to win the English girls’ U13 open stroke play championship by four shots at Copt Heath Golf Club, Warwickshire.

It’s the second year in a row that the trophy has gone overseas, following last year’s success by Emma Spitz of Austria.

Emilie, 12, shot one-under 73 today to clinch her success, having been right in the mix throughout the championship. “This means a lot, it’s a big satisfaction,” she said afterwards. “The last round was the most pleasing and I also played well coping with the pressure on the last few holes.”

The English challenge was led by Mimi Rhodes who was runner-up on 10-over par. Mimi, who is based in Spain and is a member at Burnham and Berrow in Somerset, is also 12 and led by one shot going in to the final round. A few early nerves contributed to a first-hole double bogey but she settled well and played the back nine in just one-over par for 78.

Meanwhile, Emilie played the front nine in level par and came home in one under. Her very neat card included just two bogeys – one on each half – and three birdies.

Third place went to another of the five-strong Italian squad, Alessia Nobilio, while Surrey’s Annabell Fuller took fourth place. Annabell’s older sister, Sammy, is a former winner of the U13 title.
