Five teams book places at County Finals

Teams from Lincolnshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, Lancashire and Surrey have booked places at the final of the England Golf women’s inter-county championship, at East Devon Golf Club from 17-21 September.

They each won through their regional county match week and will be joined at County Finals by a sixth team, to be decided at this week’s Midlands South competition at Mentmore Golf Club in Buckinghamshire.

Lincolnshire, representing Midlands North, are the defending national champions and this will be their fourth consecutive appearance at County Finals. They secured their place at their regional final at The Nottinghamshire where they won all five of their matches.

The team included Holly Clyburn who had travelled straight from Nairn in Scotland, where she had helped GB&I win the Curtis Cup for the first time in 16 years. She was joined by Sophie Beardsall, India Clyburn, Helen Hewlett, Emily Slater, Emilee Taylor, Emma Tipping and Jess Wilcox.

Midlands North final placings: Lincolnshire 5pts, Derbyshire 3, Staffordshire 2½, Leicestershire & Rutland 2½, Nottinghamshire 1, Shropshire 1.

Essex, representing the East, were unbeaten during their regional match week at Ipswich Golf Club, Suffolk. They conceded just half a point during the series of matches when they were held to a draw by Norfolk. Essex have won the English county championship on two previous occasions, both in the late 1970s.

Their team was Phoebe Cipa, Gabriella Cowley, Daisy Dyer, Liz Gibson, Paige Kemp, Sam Lovell, Kelly Martin, Dulcie Sverdloff, Charlotte Thompson, Trish Wilson.

East region final placings:  Essex 4½ pts, Suffolk 4, Hertfordshire 3, Cambs & Hunts 2, Norfolk 1½, Bedfordshire 0.

Gloucestershire, who have been national runners-up twice in the last six years, won all five of their South West regional matches at Trevose. They secured their clean sweep with a final day 5-4 victory over the hosts, Cornwall, who finished  runners-up.

Their team was Hannah Barwood, Corinne Durber, Jemima Gregson, Jo Hodge, Alison Kelly, Lucy Padley, Bethan Popel, Alex Saunders, Shelby Smart and Victoria Wakeley-Jones.

South West final placings: Gloucestershire 5, Cornwall 4, Somerset 2, Dorset 2, Devon 1½, Wiltshire ½.

Lancashire, (pictured top) the 2009 national champions, were also unbeaten in the North regional week at Ganton, Yorkshire. They conceded just a half-point to Cheshire, whose team included Bronte Law, another member of the winning Curtis Cup side. They confirmed their overall win by beating Yorkshire 6-3 on the final day.

The Lancashire team was: Gemma Batty, Emma Clegg, Sarah Cousins, Nikki Foster, Bethany Garton, Gill Nutter, Sophie Powell, Catherine Roberts, Emily Taylor and Brogan Townend.

North region final placings: Lancashire 4½pts, Yorkshire 4, Northumberland 3, Cheshire 2½, Cumbria 1, Durham 0.

Surrey, representing the South region, won all four of their matches at Princes, Kent. They secured their place at County Finals by beating Sussex by one point on the final day. They began the week in style when Katie Fewster had a hole in one on the first day on the second hole.

The Surrey team was: Tana Churchill, Annabel Dimmock, Katie Fewster, Sammy Fuller, Charlotte Griffith, Daisy May Kenny, Lisa McGowan, Inci  Mehmet, Louisa Tarn and Nicola Taylor

South region final placings: Surrey 4pts, Sussex 3, Hampshire 2, Kent 1, Middlesex 0.
