Surrey are the overnight leaders following the opening day’s play of the English Women’s County Finals at Denham Golf Club.
Lottie Woad was instrumental in helping her side win their opening two matches of the tournament against Hertfordshire and Yorkshire as she emerged victorious from both of her singles matches against Jackie Foster and Megan Clarke.
Woad’s teammates Nicola Taylor and Ellie Monk paired up superbly in the foursomes to claim a brace of wins themselves as Surrey ended the first day on four points, two points clear of nearest challengers Yorkshire, Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
The morning session at Denham Golf Club saw Yorkshire take an early lead in the standings with a commanding 4-1 win over Buckinghamshire, while Surrey and Lincolnshire completed 3.5-1.5 victories over Hertfordshire and Somerset respectively.
There were a number of impressive performances in the opening exchanges as Yorkshire’s Beth Norton won 6&5 against Alice Kozlowski, Surrey’s Taylor and Monk saw off Suzanne Thrower and Ava Gifford-Moore 7&6 and Yorkshire’s Katie Stephens and Evie Cooke beat Grace Rigby-Walden and Ella Butteriss 5&3.

In the foursomes, the spoils were shared after victories from Taylor and Monk and Yorkshire’s Hannah Holden and Rachel Taylor.
Decisively, Surrey were able to win two of the three singles matches later on as Woad and Ellen Yates beat Clarke and Norton respectively while Mia Eales-Smith grabbed a win for Yorkshire as she saw off Hyun-Ji Kim.
