English talent to the fore in initial GB&I Curtis Cup squad

The initial GB&I squad for this year’s Curtis Cup match against the USA has been announced today – with England providing seven of the 12 players.

The 42nd staging of the biennial match will take place at Merion Golf Club from 10-12 June.

Once again, Elaine Ratcliffe will captain the GB&I squad as the women look to bounce back from last year’s 12-8 loss to the USA at Conwy Golf Club in Wales.

Annabell Fuller, Caley McGinty and Charlotte Heath all took part last year and are in the running for final selection again. Fuller (main image alongside Heath)  is aiming to make the final squad for a third Curtis Cup appearance.

They are joined by 2022 England women’s squad colleagues Rosie Belsham and Amelia Williamson.

Lottie Woad, currently a member of the girls’ squad and the reigning women’s and girls’ Order of Merit champion (pictured below) is named alongside 2020 English Women’s Amateur champion Emily Price.

Also included in the pre-selection group are Irish trio Beth Coulter, Anna Foster and Lauren Walsh and Scotland’s Hannah Darling and Louise Duncan.

The final squad of eight players will be selected in April. The top two players in the World Amateur Golf Rankings on 21 April will earn automatic selection and, five days later, Ratcliffe will make her six captain’s picks.

After naming the provisional squad, Ratcliffe, herself a former English Women’s Amateur champion and Curtis Cup player, said: “We have selected a group of very talented players for our Curtis Cup squad and we will be monitoring their form and results over the coming months as we look to select the strongest possible side to play at Merion.

“Despite the result, there were really encouraging signs in the team’s performance at Conwy and with a number of the players returning to join this year’s squad, there is a strong foundation to build upon as we prepare for the match in June.”

This year’s contest will be played over three days with eight singles matches, six foursomes matches and six fourball matches determining the winning team. The USA leads the overall series 30-8 with three matches drawn.
