England’s men aiming to reign in Spain

Sam Bairstow, Jack Brooks and Arron Edwards-Hill will return to Spain later this month with three England colleagues to try and retain the Costa Ballena Octangular International Challenge title.

Brabazon champion Bairstow, Cheshire’s Brooks and Hill, from Essex, were key members of the England squad which beat Ireland 5-4 in a rain-soaked final the last time the international team event was staged in January 2020 (pictured below).

Now the experienced trio will link up with Hertfordshire’s Jack Bigham, 2020 English Men’s Amateur champion Jack Cope (main image) and BB&O’s Olly Huggins to try and reign in Spain.

The match will take place from 26-29 January and offers a welcome return to European competition for six members of the 2022 England men’s squad.

The tournament could not take place in 2021 because of travel restrictions, denying England the immediate chance to defend their crown.

Now the squad will have a delayed chance to retain the silverware and make it a seventh win for England since the event was first held in 2001.

England won the inaugural event and have been crowned champions on five other occasions – 2005, 2006, 2014, 2016 and 2020.
