England Women’s Amateur – Day Four: Davina eyes a spot in final four

Davina Xanh is confident that her strong recent run of form will be enough to take her one step further than last year and into the semi-finals of the 2022 English Women’s Amateur Championship.

The 18-year-old made it through to the quarter-finals with an attritional 3&1 victory over Isabelle Simpson on Friday afternoon to set up a last-eight encounter with Middlesbrough’s Katie Stephens.

Stephens backed up her stunning win over Lottie Woad with an equally impressive 6&5 success against Gemma Burgess in a match that she led from wire to wire at Lindrick Golf Club.

For Xanh, Friday’s clash with Stephens will represent an opportunity to right a wrong from 12 months ago where she was beaten in the quarter-finals by Amelia Williamson but the Mendip Spring golfer feels her game is in a better place this time around.

“I’m really happy. I seemed to have found some form this week,” she said.

“I played a few more holes today than yesterday! I was trying to get up at the start but I made a mistake on the first but you have to stay patient, wait for her to make the mistakes and take advantage of them.

“I find it a lot easier to put mistakes to the back of my mind than I used to but with match play it’s not as bad because if you make a mistake, it’s only on one hole.

“If I play as well tomorrow as I have been playing then there’s no reason why I can’t reach the semi-final.

“I’m very excited about tomorrow. I played with Katie in the stroke play so it will be nice to see her again!”

Nicola Slater (pictured above) will take on Ellise Rymer in another of Friday’s quarter-finals after she secured a fairly comfortable 2&1 win against Maria Toledo Bailey from Druids Heath.

Slater, playing out of Woodsome Hall, had built a two-hold lead with five to play and she didn’t let that advantage slip, claiming victory on the 17th green by holing for a par four.

In the final match of Thursday afternoon, Rymer held her nerve on the first extra hole to see off the valiant challenge of Ellie Burdis to firmly exceed her expectation of making the last 16.

Abbie Teasdale continued her strong run of form in South Yorkshire as her 3&2 win over Ella Butteriss set up a last-eight meeting with Alexandra Phelps after the Woking golfer’s tense 21st-hole victory against Jessica Brown.

The remaining quarter-final will see Harriet Barker, a 3&2 winner over Ana Dawson in the last 16, face Ellena Slater after she claimed a victory against England girls’ squad member Rachel Gourley by the same scoreline.
