England quartet selected for GB&I Vagliano teams

Four England golfers have been selected for women and girls’ GB&I teams for matches against the Continent of Europe later this month.

Alice Hewson, Lily May Humphreys and Bel Wardle are among the first six players selected for the Vagliano Trophy match at Royal St George’s, from 28-29 June.

Patience Rhodes follows in the footsteps of her sister, Mimi, with selection for the Junior Vagliano Trophy match, which will be played simultaneously.

Hewson scored her fourth win on the US college circuit earlier this year in the ICON Invitational. Humphreys won the Welsh and Irish Women’s Stroke Play Championships last month and was also runner-up in the English Women’s Amateur. Wardle won the Comboy Leveret in March and was runner-up in the Welsh stroke play.

England’s Elaine Ratcliffe will captain the Vagliano Trophy team with the hosts seeking a first win in the biennial encounter since 2005 when they defeated the Continent of Europe 13-11 at Golf de Chantilly.

GB&I are bidding to win the Junior Vagliano Trophy for the first time since the international match for girls was inaugurated in 2011 and Maria Dunne will captain the side for the first time in the match.

Darcey Harry, 15, Wales
