Austria’s Emma Spitz completed a runaway victory in the English U13 girls’ open championship at Tiverton, Devon, winning the title by 15 shots.
The battle for second place was won by Surrey’s Martha Lewis who, like Emma, finished the tournament with a level par round of 74 today.
“It’s great, a great feeling,” said Emma (image © Leaderboard Photography), who was four-under par for the 54-hole event, having returned earlier scores of one-under 73 and 71.
“I played good today, but I didn’t have as many birdies as yesterday and the day before,” she remarked.
Emma, 13, plays at Schloss Schönborn golf club, near Vienna, and she adds this success to an Austrian U14 title which she won in a play-off only last week.
She made the trip to England for the competition: “There are many more girls in my age group in England and it’s more competitive,” she said. “I didn’t know how good the girls are so I thought I’d just play good and see what happens. I really enjoyed it, I had three nice rounds.”
Meanwhile, Martha Lewis was delighted to be crowned England’s leading player. “I’m really happy,” she said. “I didn’t play great in the first round but I held it together and I played steady today.”
Her final round of level par moved her up from third to second place, while Ebonie Lewis (Knowle) finished third and Nicole Amos (Faversham) was fourth. “I didn’t think I’d come second, but I was trying to aim for top England player,” said the 13-year-old.
Martha, who took up golf when she was about five – to keep up with her brothers – ended her round with two birdies in the last three holes. On the par five 16th she reached the green in two and two-putted for birdie, while on the 17th she played a seven-iron approach to within a foot of the hole.
She’s got a busy summer ahead, with two events coming up in Scotland before junior county week and the North of England U16 championship.
