A chip-in effort for birdie on the opening hole from Rebecca Wood helped a quartet of players from Burton-on-Trent Golf Club and Charnwood Forest Golf Club take home the Club Team Championship title.
The 20-yard effort maximised the front 9 for the team who recorded 49 of their 87 point score in the opening half of their round as they battled to victory in testing conditions at Woodhall Spa’s Bracken course.
The high winds and torrential rain, especially later on in the round, made scoring hard but the team of Rebecca Wood, Ricky Wood and Wayne Partridge (all Burton-on-Trent GC) and Shaun Taylor (Charnwood Forest GC) finished a full three points ahead of their closest challengers.
The team said it was handy to have two single-figure players and two higher handicaps because you can rely on the lower handicaps to get decent scores on each hole and then capitalise when the high handicappers get par.
They used this tactic to great effect as each player had at least eight scoring holes in the tournament play where only the best two of the four players scores will be recorded across each hole.
Taylor, from Charnwood Forest GC, said: “The whole experience has been fantastic. It has been a great day out and playing in a team format has been made it even more enjoyable.”
