Ace play from Rachael Goodall at Helen Holm

Cheshire’s Rachel Goodall aced her way to a share of fifth place at the Helen Holm Scottish women’s open stroke play championship at Troon.

The 21-year-old from Heswall had a hole-in-one on the 17th in the last round at the Royal Troon championship links. It helped her to finish on five-under par for the tournament and it was one of three aces scored during the championship.

Rachael , who trains with England Golf’s top ranking Performance Squad,  was in the thick of the action throughout the 54-hole event – and, but for a disastrous nine early in the final round, could have been right at the top of the leaderboard.

After the first round at Troon Portland, she shared the lead with Ireland’s Leona Maguire when they both scored seven-under par 68. Rachael started eagle, birdie and didn’t have a bogey on her card.

In the second round she scored one-under 74 and was lying fourth on eight-under par. Rachael got to nine-under after a birdie on the first hole of the final round,– but slid down the leaderboard with a quadruple bogey nine at the fourth, sandwiched by bogeys on the third and fifth.

She settled admirably after that, played the next 11 holes in level par, with one birdie and one bogey – and then had that ace on the 17th.

The championship was won by Welsh teenager Amy Boulden, who will make her Curtis Cup debut in June. She birdied the long 15th, the long 16th and the short 17th to jump into the lead at 10 under par – and then holed a pressure par putt of 5ft to stay one shot ahead of Perrine Delacour of France.
