Abraham Trophy win for Yorkshire’s Charlotte

Yorkshire teenager Charlotte Eastwood swept to a four shot win in today’s Abraham Trophy final at Copt Heath, Warwickshire, and claimed the title of England’s most improved girl golfer.

Charlotte, from Woodsome Hall Golf Club, near Leeds, (image © Leaderboard Photography) returned a net 68 – six under par – playing off 16 handicap.

The 14-year-old was four shots clear of runner-up Julia Warke of Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire, a six-handicapper who opened her account with an eagle three on the first hole and went on to return net 72.

Third place went to two-handicapper Charlotte Barrow of Brokenhurst Manor in Hampshire, who returned net 73 and pipped Morgan Thomas (Beau Desert, Staffordshire) on countback.

The Abraham Trophy final was contested by 20 girls from all over the country who qualified on the basis of handicap reduction.

“I was very excited about today’s final and just wanted to try my best,” said Charlotte. “Winning means a lot because my dad and my coach have put in a lot of time and effort.” She is coached by John Eyre at Woodsome Hall and has lessons every two or three weeks.

Charlotte was a 36-handicapper at the start of last season – and a 16-handicapper by the end of it. “I won six or seven trophies and got my name on three boards,” she recalled.

Her score today was her best-ever gross, but she has had a better net score in the past. “I had a 56 last year!” she said.

Now, her target is to get down to 10 this season – and today’s score will certainly help.
