County champions on parade

The pride of England’s counties will be on parade at Woodhall Spa this weekend when the players will seek the prized titles of County Champion of Champions.

There are separate competitions for men, boys and senior men, all taking place on the Hotchkin course, while the combined women and girls’ event will be played on the Bracken.

The players will be following in illustrious footsteps with past winners including Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Nick Faldo and Lee Westwood.

The women and girls’ tournament was introduced for the first time last year and Lancashire’s Catherine Roberts will be back to defend her women’s title on Saturday. Her challengers will include Suffolk’s Alice Barlow who was the 2016 girls’ winner.

Other competitors include England girl international Amelia Williamson, who is the Norfolk women’s champion.

The boys’ tournament also takes place on Saturday and the contenders include Yorkshire’s Alex Fitzpatrick, who will bid to follow in his brother’s footsteps. Matt Fitzpatrick, who won this title in 2011, has just become the youngest Englishman to win four times on the European Tour.

The senior men will play their event over both days with 18 holes on each of Saturday and Sunday. David Niven of BB&O will return to defend his title in a field which includes 2015 winner Keith Waters and Lincolnshire’s Richard Latham, a two-time winner of the English senior men’s championship. He is the Woodhall Spa General Manager and will be playing on home ground.

The men’s competition will be played on Sunday and the field includes the 2014 winner, Mark Collins of Kent. Other players in the field include international Jack Yule of Norfolk and past English mid-amateur champion Martin Foulkes of Nottinghamshire.

All four competitions will be played over 36 holes
